With an "alright, this time it's for real" promise, Toby Mac turns the keys of the ignition and hits the gas on Portable Sounds, his third and most impressive solo effort to date. The musician-producer sounds more confident and comfortable than ever before, deftly mixing elements of rap, rock, pop, R&B, funk, and even a little reggae into a deliciously creative entrée. Some of the "joints on this record" – as Toby Mac's boy TruDog calls them – fall more into one style or another. Yet the world party sound that Toby Mac introduced on his previous Diverse City is built upon here with the opening "One World" as well as "No Ordinary Love." Pop flavors more tracks than before with guitar-driven numbers like "Made to Love," "I'm For You," and the infectious "Suddenly." Fans will also be pleased as TruDog is indeed back on the ridiculously cute "Hype Man." Urgent rockers like "Ignition" and the silky smooth "Lose My Soul" give even more spice and variety to liven up an already electric mix. The latter track is finely tuned with guest vocals from Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac pal Mandisa. Much like Sting, Toby Mac has transcended a former identity (as part of the D.C. Talk super group) and grown into an artist worthy of merit on his own. Portable Sounds stands up to repeated listens with a fresh and energetic sound and a buoyant and unapologetic joy seldom heard. --Michael Lyttle |

The shipment arrived quickly. It would have had to be shipped by FedEx to arrive any quicker. The music CD was of very good recording quality and had no "bad" areas on the disc as some CD's have. Good job. |

AWESOME CD! BEST EVER! |
This is by far tobyMac's best CD ever, including his February 2010 album Tonight. This CD contains the best Christian music on the market today. His songs are a combination of pop, rock, hip-hop, soul, and several other genres. This CD includes his hit songs Boomin', Made to Love, Lose my Soul, and Ignition. I love all of the songs on this CD and would recommend this album to anyone, Christian or not.

Perfect album for teens and adults |
This is an edgy, upbeat Christian album.
I bought this item on Evangelismbookstore MP3 downloader.
I first heard one of the songs on KLOVE a Christian radio station. It was called "Made to Love" I really liked it and hoped Evangelismbookstore had it. They did so I looked for a few more. I bought, "Ignition". This has been the song of choice for me when working out or just hanging out. I decided to buy one more song "Boomin'" This was another good song. This is a great album for teens and adults.
Great music with a great morale value.
I recommend buying these songs or album on Evangelismbookstore's MP3 downloader service. You get an MP3 file unprotected so you can copy it to any player, including an iPod. However, if you buy it on iTunes, you get a M4P file which can only be played on Apple devices. Evangelismbookstore is more compatible.

Love It!!! |
This album has to rate in my Top 5 greatest albums! Some background: I am a Christian, and therefore listen to a small amount, like 0.01 percent, of secular music. Just so you know what albums this has to contend with to get in my top 5. Also, dc Talk, with whom tobyMac was arguably the lead singer, is my favorite band of all time (with Kutless and Switchfoot in a close second and third). Toby, in my opinion, was better with Mike and Kevin than he is by himself, but it is very close. This album is kind of a mixture of his two previous albums. Here is a song breakdown:
One World: A catchy first track. Definite hip-hop beat here. The message is one of Toby's most used: people of all races are "compatible" on God's earth, we need to show love to others who may be different than us in this life, until "it's time to fly" and we can go to a perfect world (heaven)
Made To Love: Arguably the most popular song on this album, this was the single for this album. Much slower, almost the slowest song on the album. About why exactly we were put on this earth: to love God and worship Him. Also about His love for us.
Boomin': This is the best song, hands down, on this entire album! Some nifty steel guitar, some rap in the verses. The chorus is sweet!! About spreading the Gospel through music. Mandisa has this opera thing at the end. Get some earplugs for that part!
I'm For You: A catchy little tune with lots of guitar. About being there for a friend. No rap, but Toby really shows his vocal talent.
Face Of The Earth/ Chuck @ Artist Development: A slower song. Quite relaxing. I often find this song running through my head. About finding a long lost brother, and restarting that relationship. A quirky little interlude at the end. Reminds you of the DCT days.
No Ordinary Love: A great hip-hop beat here. Probably the hip-hoppiest song on the album. About God's unfailing, unordinary love for us lowly sinners. Nirva Dorsaint-Ready has a good gueat appearance.
Ignition: All I have to say is WOW!!! This is a definite hard rock, head-bangin' song with a little screamo at the end. About Jesus "jumpstarting your heart" for Him. Amazing song.
HypeMan (truDog '07) A slick little tune featuring Truett, Toby's eldest son (a.k.a. truDog) rapping his heart out. This kid has a bright future ahead of him in the Christian music industry. truDog rocks!
Suddenly: A neat song. Some nifty guitar riffs. Nice beat. About a broken relationship, with Toby telling the male half of said relationship to leave the past in the past, let bygones be bygones, and so on and so on.
All In (Letting Go)/ Mr. Talkbox Interlude: Slower tune. Good beat. About letting go and giving your life wholly to Jesus. Similar message to Million Pieces (Kissin' Your Cares Goodbye) by Newsboys. Essentially a modern version of Leaning On the Everlasting Arms, the old hymn.
Feelin' So Fly: [record stopping abruptly] TIME WARP!!! This song brings back memories of disco halls, disco balls, bellbottom pants, and everything else 70's. About getting a "spiritual high" through Jesus Christ. Amazing song. I dare you to keep your feet still.
No Signal: A Jamaican reggae tune. Kind of cheesy. This song was inspired by Toby's wife's Jamaican background. No real spiritual message, basically he says he's on a plane with "no signal on his cellular phone" and how he misses his wife and kids.
Lose My Soul: Ladies and gentlemen, THE WINNAH!! This is a great song. Easily the most thought provoking song on the album. Some "nice", Western-style guitar strumming at the beginning, but it soon breaks out into a Toby-esque beat. About not wanting to gain the world and lose your soul. Kirk Franklin and Mandisa have stellar perfromances in this song as well. The Afterparty thing doesn't really make any sense
Boomin' (Bonus Remix): This song is your typical remix. It's slower than the original, no guitars. Has much more of a hip-hop sound. Shonlock has an amazing rap line. That's the only thing that really makes this track worth it.
Ignition (Bonus Remix): A definite downgrade from the original. Slower, no steel guitars. More hip-hoppy, like the other bonus remix.
Overall, this album is very highly recommended. Toby has some definite talent, and he displays it incredibly on this masterpiece. You would be a bit on the hooie side not to pick this album up.
