Unbinding the Gospel Unbinds the Hidden Power in Church |
For years I have observed as writer after writer have written tricks, techniques, programs, and virtually every other tool known to humankind to "grow" the church. Yet, after a year or two, they are gone, reality is back, and the reader and the church is right back where it started. THIS BOOK IS NOT THAT KIND OF BOOK!
Reese makes it clear that Unbinding the Gospel is NOT about some special program, some new technique, nor some shebboleth ridden tool for transformation, it is ALL about developing a relationship with God and other believers by way of prayer, Bible study and simply BEING the people of God. Further, her comments about that nasty, toxic word, evangelism, is right on target...I have never seen a room clear faster than when we tried to teach "evangelism". But can evangelism be taught...or must it first be caught?
If you are looking for a line by line, week by week, checklist for growing a church, this is NOT it. If you are looking for a line by line, week be week way of growing in love of God, this IS the book. As a minister, I found it to be scripturally sound, hermaneutically correct, but also an EASY read. Yet, this text is challenging in that it convicted me in my own lack of spiritual growth and connectednesss. As a result, my own faith has been renewed and strengthened, leading to me being more effective as a pastor, parent, friend, Christian.

The Best trilogy for Unbinding a sleeping Church |

Martha Grace Reese has written Unbinding the Gospel based on solid research of over 1000 interviews of Churches doing great Evangelism. Yet her book is about prayer and spiritual development of the individual. It is easy to read and understand for the common layperson. The book is great, but the 40 day prayer journal is better. Prayer is central to a relationship with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Following the outline of reading a chapter, prayer journal, and small group meeting to discuss the ideas will change you and bring you closer to your maker, your people in the small group, and to yourself. If followed through the other books in the series the Unbinding process will change your church. Our church started with one, grew to two, then a small group and now a whole church study. It is amazing what God can do with so little, faith like a mustard seed will reap hundred fold in your church too. |

Caring for People who do not Know Faith |
Author Martha Grace Reese offers a book (Unbinding the Gospel, Real Life Evangelism) in three parts aimed at mainline churches. Part One discusses why we do evangelism. Part Two provides examples of what growing churches are doing. And Part Three provides specific steps your church can take to be more evangelistic.
Reese provides an excellent definition of evangelism. It is "people sharing with others their personal understanding that life is better, richer, truer if one has faith in Christ and lives in a faith community." We do evangelism to help men, women and children begin a life of relationship with God.
This book reflects the research done for the Mainline Evangelism Project. They interviewed over 1,000 people in completing this national four year study.
The most important finding from the Project was "a vivid relationship with God lies at the heart of real evangelism." They found the most ardent evangelists are not only in love with God, they are also part of a church they love and they care about people who do not know faith. |
