Editorial Reviews for  'Get Lucky'

Product Description
This is the sixth solo studio album from the legendary musician and follows 2007's highly successful Kill To Get Crimson, which Rolling Stone heralded as 'a gem' and USA Today described as, '...yet another unpretentious showcase for his unmistakable gifts as a musician, tunesmith and storyteller.'
Recorded at Knopfler's award-winning British Grove Studios in West London, Get Lucky was co-produced with longtime collaborators, engineer Chuck Ainlay and keyboardist Guy Fletcher and featured Richard Bennett, Danny Cummings, John McCusker, Matt Rollings and Glenn Worf. The 11-track album explores a lifetime of musical roots exemplified by the title track. 'The first itinerant person I ever met would sing in soul bands in winter, then work part-time in fairgrounds or 'go pick fruit down south' when the weather turned warm,' explains Knopfler. 'I was about 15 years old, stuck in school and envious. 'Get Lucky' came from him and other traveling characters I went on to meet in places I'd find myself working short-term, like farms, warehouses, building sites, before I got lucky with my songs.'

A Poet to the End
If you're in any doubt as to whether you would enjoy this album, just read the lyrics [at [...]] and imagine them pleasantly sung [I never enjoyed his singing this well in the past] to a mix of celtic and blues accompaniments with tasteful -- rather than dazzling -- guitar [single-coil, double-coil electric, steel-string acoustic] plucked with facile fingertips, along with appropriately ethnic instruments. Knopfler has turned out a song cycle that would make any of the great folk or maritime singer-songwriters proud, offering new twists on timeless traditions.

Great music, Knopfler's most refined work yet
Mark Knopfler can write sings like few other can, with such vivid imagery and clarity. Since his Dire Straits days, Knopfler's music has evolved and Get Lucky is his most refined release to date. His trademark insightful lyrics and guitar wizardry remain. A richer sound though is present on this album with strings and woodwind playing a larger role than in previous releases, usually with a Celtic-like sound.
Impressively, Knopfler's voice sounds fantastic on this album and seems to be getting better with age, with a richer and deeper tone that bodes well for the style of music he creates these days.

M.K. Continues Cranking Out Perfection!
M.K.continues to make astounding albums one after another. He is the almighty "annointed one" when it comes to brilliant records, playing ability, and beautiful lyrical messages. Better vocalists exist no doubt, as well as more dynamic on-stage performers, BUT NO ONE is on the same planet as M.K. in overall musical ability and an innate knack to continue to crank em' out, all the while out-doing himself each time!

Get Lucky
Excelent effort by Mark Knopfler who doesn't get encapsulated in one type of music.
He dares explore his musical roots and asserts himself again as great composer.

Soothing Sounds From a Veteran Songwriter
For me, there is a subtle similarity between the singing voice of Mark Knopfler and that of Bob Dylan. I start my review with this observation because I truly believe the music that Mark Knopfler (former Dire Straits frontman) is creating these days is the kind of stuff that Dylan should have gravitated toward after turning 40. Get Lucky, Knopfler's latest is another smooth, relaxed, melodic and intelligent effort. It's the kind of music to sit back with and enjoy. It reveals a veteran songwriter who is comfortable in his craft, and because of this the storytelling comes easy. The experience is like sharing a fine wine amongst friends, reflecting on times shared, feeling comfortable with the present, and yet still eager for tomorrow. Mark Knopfler's solo stuff is top shelf. I'm already looking forward to his next release. Oh, if only Dylan had went this route sometime after Empire Burlesque.
