Album Description |
|
On his new album, Trouble In Mind, the 32 year-old Carll navigates his way through both stormy weather and calm, sun-drenched waters with ease, emerging with songs that melt even the hardest heart in town. Their impact is heightened by the fact that they're songs born of both immersion in the works of his songwriting heroes and plenty of real world experience. Those elements certainly permeate Trouble In Mind, but there's a much sharper focus to the material, thanks in part, to more time in the studio and some great players sure to be familiar to roots-rock aficionados, including, Dan Baird, Darrell Scott, Will Kimbrough and former Flying Burrito Brother Al Perkins. Carll's personality, emotional but never too sentimental, mischievous, funny, world-weary and sardonic, imbues every track of Trouble in Mind. |

Are you kidding me -- why haven't you bought this yet? |

Some "traditional" singer-songwriters are rocking-chair, chord-change strapped (Robert-Earl Keen comes to mind) and others can't help but launching themselves into melody and groove (Robbie Fulks, Joe Ely, John Prined). Hayes Carll is not tethered in the least. This is special stuff that exists in the realm that has no label. Never lazy, always urgent, satirical and straight -- this is Drive By Truckers without the pop cred. I've never seen him, but you know he's a stand-up, 10-sq-ft warrior every night selling his tunes. What's great is that this record sounds like it was made by a rock star, but like Dale Watson and the Flaming Lips, you know this dude plugs in 10 minutes before showtime and tears it up, then grabs a longneck at the bar and hangs for a while. Two LLs straight up. |

Carll writes good songs, but the twang gets a little heavy at times |
"Trouble in Mind" is my first foray into the Hayes Carll experience, and for the most part it's a good one. In an era where the big country acts seem as corporate as Jefferson Starship, Carll is a throwback to the musician who is doing what he loves, and his career goals include an opening set of "Austin City Limits" rather than platinum records and a Christmas album.
This is an easy, basic record filled clear songs that seem to have been left as-is by everyone involved. Listen for lots of solid guitar work as Carll sings the tunes (it's hard to find a back-up singer on most of these tunes). This is an album for quiet moments when you want to listen to the lyrics - this isn't a party album or something you'd throw on the jukebox at the Saturday night beerhall. There are some genuinely funny songs as well, including the ultimate lament of the ignorant boyfriend, "She Left Me for Jesus."
The only problem I have with Mr. Carll is his singing - while his voice is nice enough, he unleashes a nasal twang on some songs that just overwhelms the senses. I have generally preferred "Texas Country" to "Nashville Country" for that very reason - give me Raul Malo, Lyle Lovett, or Vince Gill over a nasal twanger any day. That's not to say that there aren't some twangers with amazing voices - I can listen to Dwight Yoakam all day - but Carll's voice is not in that class. As a result, for me to truly enjoy Mr. Carll I have to put his CD into a multi-disc changer and put it on shuffle.
That being said, this is an enjoyable album worthy of your time. |

I had heard snippets of this singer/songwriter on You Tube, etc and was impressed with this style and voice. I was however disappointed in this album of songs, with some exceptions. Since I live in Texas and I have seen playbills advertising his performances in the DFW metroplex I will catch a live performance, maybe he has a commanding stage presence. |

I love this CD, this guy. I put this on all the time for people and they love it too. It stays in my mental rotation for top X great albums. |
