It's fitting that the Kid Rock revival got started when the Beastie Boys featured him in their Grand Royal magazine--and not because the kid from Detroit shares their skin tone. Rock has often been compared with the early Beasties--the boys of "Fight for Your Right to Party" and "Brass Monkey," the boys no one ever thought would grow up. With lines like "I ain't straight outta Compton, I'm straight out the trailer" and "I started an escort service--for all the right reasons," it's obvious that Kid Rock doesn't aim to follow suit. But that's no hindrance to Devil--backed by the funky metal band Twisted Brown Trucker and special guests like blues vets Robert Bradley and Thronetta Davis, Rock is hosting one hell of an interesting party. Ultimately, Rock's party is great, schlocky fun, equal parts old Beasties and Sebastian Bach--making Devil a guilty pleasure, the Starship Troopers of hip-hop. --Randy Silver

Customer Reviews for  'Devil Without a Cause'

Devil without Down-loadable Tunes
I only wanted one song, but since Kid Rock refuses to offer down-loadable tunes I was forced to buy the entire CD. The song Cowboy (the reason I purchased the CD) is a classic an the unofficial strip club anthem. I give two thumbs up for Cowboy and only one thumb up for the rest of the album.

Awful, never again
This store is awful, I ordered the cd in December and it has yet to arrive in the start of Febuary. I have ordered engine parts which arrived much faster than this cd. Dont buy from here!

Rap and Metal can be a workable concept
It's a proven fact that Rap and Metal can mix together in perfect harmony. I mean where do I stop?: The Beastie Boys, Anthrax, Biohazard with Oynx, and Rage Against The Machine. These are the founding fathers of Rap and Metal, so it's possible to do, but this was pathetic. Not saying all the songs were bad, but alot of them were. "Batiwada" was o.k, "I Am The Bullgod" is the first song I heard from Kid Rock, so it's the best, and "Someone's Gotta Feel This" was also good, but the rest is enough to make me want to throw up. I don't know what could've been done to save this disc, but it's too late now. However, Kid Rock does show enough talent to actually sing a song without the jigga-jigga-scratch, and that's on "Only God Knows Why". It's a shame that I hate that song, but I'll give him credit that he actually did it. I guess I can identify with Kid Rock in one way we're both single fathers, and we need to go out, and work for a living to provide for our children, but this was a stupid debut. I don't know if he get's any better, or not I will have to play the rest of his albums. He does prove he can sing with the song "Picture", so maybe there's hope. Let's just forget about this one, and chalk it up to getting it out of his system.

Come to think of it, pretty bad.
I actually liked this when it first came out. 12 years later, I have to wonder why. Kid Rock may be talented from what I've heard about his live shows. I was surprised to find out he could play an instrument. That leads me to believe he might be able to read music...another big surprise. I think there's many much more talented artists out there for sure. This is my personal opinion and I'm entitled to it. He's great if you're not that much into music and have a cheap stereo or an IPOD.

Stay away!
The album is enjoyable, what you can hear of it. The album is editted for radio and ruins the whole effect. In the description it was marked as explicit lyrics. Nowhere was there any indication it was editted.
I would give the work by Kid Rock, 3.5 or 4 stars, however I am dissapointed in Evangelismbookstore and thus the 1-star rating.
