Editorial Reviews for  'Stadium Arcadium'

Album Description
Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers calls the band’s first new album in four years, Stadium Arcadium, the most-anticipated album of the spring, "the best thing that we’ve ever done…. There’s this weird kind of sublime, subliminal undercurrent that is suggestive, in a spirited way, of our earliest records." Exuding all the passion, energy and funked-up rock that have made the Red Hot Chili Peppers one of the most popular bands in history, the 2-CD Stadium Arcadium, simply put, will knock your socks off.

Four-year career hiatuses followed by sprawling double-albums could spell trouble for a band of the Chili Peppers' stature: consider they'd originally recorded enough for three discs. The restless, trouble-plagued outfit that helped break alternative rock into the mainstream with a potent fusion of punk 'n' funk in the '80s finds itself two decades on almost completely devoid of the former's energetic abandon, while the latter's effusive rhythms are considerably subdued over the course of this two-hour, 28-track collection. It's not so much that the Peppers have lost their muscular, often uber-macho edge as they have willfully tamed it in service of mature reinvention here. The mellower, often introspective, if no less potent pop ethos that characterized the crossover hit "Under the Bridge" blossoms fully here on tracks like disc one's "Snow," "Wet Sand," and the jazz-cool of "Hey."

The title track, "Desecration Smile," and "She Looks To Me" finds them venturing further into laid back pop ballad territory, while the tricky rhythms of "Dani California," "Charlie," and "So Much I" eventually kick into familiar top gear on the pop-savvy "Tell Me Baby" and hip-hop seasoned "Storm in a Teacup." It's not that there's a paucity of musical adventure here ("If" and "Animal Bar" finds them wafting into Floydish neo-psychedelia while "Make You Feel Better" seems to channel no less than Joe Jackson) but that it's delivered with a subtlety--and dare we say it?--tasteful musical restraint that's a stark contrast to the band's early, overly overt nature. There's perhaps too much mid-tempo simmering and reflection going on; like most double-albums it could be focused into a much more compelling single disc. But that seems largely beside the Peppers' hooks-over-histrionics point here: an unlikely record to kick back to, and one that both challenges assumptions and eases the band into middle age with an oft languorous, if undeniably savory groove. --Jerry McCulley

It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This
Stadium Arcadium is a true gem. It has it all: rock, pop, funk, metal, rap and various combos. Some may say the band sold out but I say they have grown into a band that can adapt to many audiences. Anthony KIedis has improved tremendously as a vocalist and the band belnds in very well with their insturments and on harmonies.

Every time I listen to this CD, I find a new song that grabs me. What can I say? This CD is a true feast for the ears. The singles Snow and Dani California grabbed me right away as did the funky Hump De Bump. But today it was Epecially in Michiagan and a few days ago it was Tell Me Baby. Last Week it was Turn It Again and the day before it was Wet Sand. Who knows what tommorow will bring?

The softer toned songs are fine too. Balance is always a good thing. 28 tracks and all of them are winners. And about a dozen are just fabulous.

Simply Fantastic
The Red Hot Chili Peppers continue to evolve and grow on the fabulous 28 track Stadium Arcadium. This double CD release has it all: fast, slow, funky, pop, rock, punk, rap, metal and combos of all the previously mentioned terms. The lead single tracks Snow and Dani California are very ear catching as well as the spunky Hump De Bump and Warlocks. Love the drumming on that last piece. Every time I listen to this CD another tracks just grabs me and I say "wow this is one classic batch of tunes!" All these tunes are solid but there are about ten...eleven...twelve and growing tracks that are super. Should I listen to Turn It On Again or Especially In Michigan or Charlie or Animal Bar. Heck there is just so much to explore in this recording. You wonder what the guys will put out next.

Anthony Kiedis has developed greatly as a lead vocalist and Chad Smith, Flea and John Frusciante really blend their instruments in perfect harmony like a well oiled machine. The Peppers have come a long way from their hard core days(not that it was bad, as Blood Sugar Sex Magic was quite griping!)but the band has matured witha ge and that is a good thing. Its never good to stand still as the Peppers are truly special.

Amazing Album
Probably the most listened to album of all musical albums on my iPod. SOOOO many songs and all of them are just awesome. I don't think you will see an output of such quantity and quality from another musical act in a long time.

Faith in Youth Restored
I'm a 50-year-old man who still thinks the music made by bands such as MC5, Stooges, Trooper, Montrose, Humble Pie, Mandrill, Brick, Kleeer, and Lakeside will never be topped as far as hard rock and punk funk goes, and I received this album as a Xmas gift from my 23-year-old daughter, who still thinks she can teach an old dog some new tricks. I have no interest in inserting myself into the raging debate about whether this album represents a return, a departure, or a further slide for the RHCP. I'm only here to say one thing: "She's Only 18" is the best song I've heard in a long, long time. It's playful, raunchy, rockin', euphoric, and big-hearted all at once. The slinky little eye-fluttery wawaaing guitar riff mirroring the vocals on the verses shows perfect restraint, setting up the power chords of the chorus. Brilliant.

Stadium Arcadium
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of my favorite rock bands ever and are certainly one of the most inspirational. But I never listened to their music until CALIFORNICATION arrived. John Frusciante had just gotten back on the band but I did not know that before. I proceeded to work backwards and found BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK and ONE HOT MINUTE. Hearing those two albums made me see a whole new side to the band that I have previously missed. I saw a new era, felt a new feel and witnessed a new manifesto. Over time, these two albums, along with CALIFORNICATION, became my favorite records.

Add STADIUM ARCADIUM to the list. This double album follows up the disappointing BY THE WAY, which I felt to be underwhelming, and looks to follow it.

But hearing it once through, I found it to be vastly better. The songs felt fresher and the melodies were strong and consistent throughout, which wasn't the case with BY THE WAY. From the vibrant, Hendrix-inspired DANI CALIFORNIA to the softer, downbeat song DEATH OF A MARTIAN, the underlying intensity of the band never let up. There were a good variety of tempos but there was a consistent polish and feel to the songs, making this a much superior album as a whole. This showed that the band didn't just mail it in; they put their whole heart in this time.

This album also felt substantial. Two discs of 14 songs each, there was never any doubt as to the quantity this album brings. This is a first for the band, having never released a double album before. Add the fact that all these songs, even the latter ones, are all good; the fans are in for a treat. STADIUM ARCADIUM doesn't feel draggy or long at all; the sequence of the songs varies well from the up-tempo tracks to the slow ones.

John Frusciante's guitar prowess sounds like it has reached a new height here. Long-time fans, especially those who loved BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK, will know how far his skill has seen a tremendous rate of improvement over the years. Here, his solos sound more complex and fuller than in previous albums, including CALIFORNICATION, while still retaining much of the emotion and virtuosity of his play. It is his tunes that drive the melodies forward, giving the album an energy and personality few other albums in the industry attain. STADIUM ARCADIUM has a very spacey theme to it and it is John's selection of scales and notes that have helped achieve that effect.

Anthony's vocals here have also reached a new height as well. One could easily hear the expansion of his range in all of the songs. He does a terrific job producing a hip-hop style for HUMP DE BUMP and an equally sublime job on the futuristic STADIUM ARCADIUM. There is power in his voice and this lends a central soul to the music.

Flea's bass has always given their albums a crucial foundation to that soul and his masterful sequences here are no exception. He has always accompanied well with John's guitar and here it takes a whole new form and maturity. Just when you thought they couldn't have thumped their previous efforts they did it here.

The beat that has been constant throughout much of their music remains to be Chad's. He doesn't tamper much with the formula that has been a trademark for much of his career. He doesn't have outrageous drum solos nor does he have the most complex of rhythms but his laid back, yet consistent, style has contributed to the catchiness of the songs.

Together, they have created something that's catchy and colorful, a bumper album with an appropriately given intergalactic theme. If you are into funk rock, you will find lots to tide you over here. In terms of sustained quality, production values, storytelling lyricism and invention, this album certainly ranks up there with my favorite rock albums of the decade and one of my favorite Red Hot Chili Peppers' albums of all time.
