Ska music has been deeply ingrained in the punk rock culture since the Clash adopted their rude boy stance near the end of the British punk invasion and the 2-Tone label put ska on the map. Suddenly, punks stopped kicking the crap out of each other long enough to dance. The debut release by Orange County, California's Sublime is a positively infectious record that marries varied styles of dub, reggae, rap, sampling, scratching, and badass dancehall ska with old-school punk overtones. Musicianship on this record is exceptionally tight, featuring Brad Nowell's innovative guitar work and bright, soulful voice. Packed with 40 oz. of rock (21 tracks) including the ultimate pot-smoking anthem "Smoke Two Joints" and the novelty hit "Date Rape." --Gail Worley |

Never too late. |
I am very happy to see that 40 oz. is receiving so many positive reviews. I'm sure it would be very easy for any conservative-minded person, to come on here and simply tear it to shreds because of it's subject matter. That isn't the case, thankfully, and I am pleasantly surprised. I have to say that if most of you starting listening to Nowell and crew in the early to mid-nineties, I envy your foresight.
Unfortunately for me, I got into this album almost 10 years after it's release (It was released when I was 7, so I think I might not have been ready for it yet). I believe, however, that because of it's classic quality and one-of-a-kind sound, it's never too late to receive and appreciate it. It would be too easy to write this work of art off as the ramblin's of a drug-addicted hood, but one listen will tell you it is so much more.
Back in 2001 (hah)A fellow radio DJ was appalled when I told him that I had never heard it (at least in it's entirety, which is how it should be heard). You would think since I was an 18 year college chick, still wet behind the ears, that was understandable. But I had no excuse for having not been privy to early Sublime, whatsoever. I had heard Date Rape, and Badfish, on the radio, and did own a copy of both Robbin' the Hood, and Sublime, so I wasn't completely depraved. At this point though I felt it had gotten a little stale. I didn't think Sublime had the kind of quality that was unforgettable. Fun, yes. Racy, most definitely. But, unforgettable? Then I got my hands on this masterpiece and it "changed my life..."
Fast forward a couple years to when I was listening to my copy of 40 oz to freedom everyday, driving around Southern California where I had moved in 2002. 40 oz was the soundtrack to my life in SoCal. I learned things about myself and other people by listening to this record with them. I have always had a taste for ORIGINAL, eclectic music, but this was something very new. And don't say it isn't an original sound. Even with the "massive amount" of sampling, this amazing record is still a gem. I learned things about harmony and layering that I didn't know as a classically trained singer. Now, I don't just enjoy this record. It is perpetually on my IPOD because I adore every sound byte. 10 years later, nothing in my music collection rivals it.
If you have a sense of humor and you like amazingly good music, then you already have this. But on the off chance that you just didn't know it existed, learn from my mistake and get it now.

NOt Just for "Punks" |
|
Knowing that I am obssessed with blues and jazz, most people are shocked to find that I not only like Sublime, but that--before playing in a jazz band--I was playing, and was inspired to become a musician by,Bradley Nowell's guitar lines. My point is, don't just discount Sublime b/c they don't fit into the genre that you typically enjoy. Some people may be put off by the lyric which--though coarse--are often fun. It's pretty tough to deny that the group had talent. Their music is an extremely potent mix of punk, reggae, and even rap. I would argue that, whether one likes any of those three genres or not, it is hard not to enjoy Sublime. Many of the things I listened to as a kid sound pretty cheesy when I revisit them, but Nowell's soulful voice and his inventive and funky guitar still get me movin' to this day! |

Best Sublime Album |
|
By far the best album ever put out by sublime. Good mix of Ska, Reggae, and Punk Rock. Catchy bass rifts with awesome guitar solos. If your just starting to get into Sublime I would recommend this as a good album to start with, even more than their Greatest Hits album. |
